Where is Lee going to be next year?

By: Donny Shabtai

Every Knicks fan is well aware about the big time free agents who will be available this summer. 'Bron. Wade. Bosh. Joe Johnson. Over two years ago with an enormous amount of foresight, Knicks president Donnie Walsh started cleaning house so that the Knicks can be players during this summers much anticipated free agency. The Knicks plan, which they completed with the Jeffries trade this past month, was to have enough cap space two offer two different players max contracts (17 million apiece). Bron and Wade. Bron and Bosh. Joe Johnson and Amare. The speculation is endless. However, with the recent rise in David Lee's game, one has to wonder if it's worth offering one player a max contract, and a modest contract (10 mil or so) to Lee. With the leftover money the Knicks can sign a decent center (think Brendan Haywood) which would allow Lee to move to power forward, his natural position. The money can be saved for the next summer, when Eddy Curry's fat contract comes off the books, and the Knicks will find themselves in position to offer another player a max contract (two summers free agency is almost as enticing as this years).
To Lee's credit, he has improved his game by leaps and bounds year after year. He started out as a rugged rebounder, then learned to finish with both hands around the rim, and ultimately became a reliable mid range shooter. In the last three years his scoring average went from 10.8 to 16.2 to 20.2. What makes you think he is going to stop improving his game? He runs the pick and roll as well as any big man in the league, and if he was able to run it with the new no. 6, would be an unstoppable force.
Yes, I know he is not as good as Chris Bosh. However, Lee has been here for five horrific years, and has hustled every play in that span. He is the captain of the team. When his grandfather died a few months ago, Lee rented his own private plan to make sure that he got to the game in time, all because he is the captain. This is a guy who wants to be here, and we should want him to stay.
What do you think? Is it worth signing one star and David Lee? What are your thoughts? Leave a comment!

  2. It doesn't matter about Lee its about getting LeBron and letting him choose the team around him. If he wants Bosh, go pay Bosh. If he wants Brendan Haywood go get Brendan Haywood. WHoever he wants let him choose the team its completely up to him just get LeBron!

  4. if the knicks are serious of winning championship what donnie should do is sign a player with a max contract such as lebron, wade or joe and forget about bosh resign lee and when free agency comes in 2011 sign another superstar, me personally i dont think it be a good move to sign 2 max contract this summer.

  5. If Donny Walsh dosn't retain David Lee I give you my word that after being a Knickerboker fan since 1951 I will no longer watch the Knicks. It is an outrage that we fans have to be lead by a guy (Walsh) who Larry Bird fired for being incompetent.

  6. i say keep lee, get a max contract guy, and then sign a center.... david lee is not a center. although he is a great player, he's been getting beat up down low for years because hes only 6'9. we need a 7 footer down low to compliment lee.

  8. Hey, a chance to sign to top free-agents doesn't happen often, knicks need to pull that trigger on Lebron&Bosh or save for next year Carmalo&CP3

  9. Listen, basketball as we know it is hit or miss. it's players working together and learning to mesh in a system that compliments their talents. I agree and disagree with some of the views of readers and sports writers. The main problem is the coach. Although D'Antoni is a good coach, he continues to show he won't play players with whom he doesn't like, i.e. Stephon Mulberry and Nate Robinson (who may get a ring this year). As coach you need to put your personal differences aside and play the players who put you in the best position to win. I don't think he is capable of that or at least he hasn't displayed that. I say keep David Lee. He's shown time and time agin he wants to be here and he works hard. Don't go after 2 max contracts. Get one max player and I would exclude LaBron for now and maybe concentrate on Joe Johnson and maybe D Wade. The other thing is look at the roster, fill the needs. Douglas I think is a good guard, but you need someone who the other team fears ie Rajon Rondo. Rafer Alston may be a good fit with Brendon Haywood is big enough to keep people out the lane and get some garbage points & rebounds. I agree we need some toughness, some bully's and goons to make players think twice about goning in the paint. We have to picks in the second round, You never know with the knicks and i don't watch a lot of college ball, but I do like Grevis from MD and my frat brother the center from Rutgers. It's going to a difficult choice, but at the end of the day it's about chemisrty and believing in one another. So I say hold off on two max deals, resign Lee and pick up some complementary peices that work and for god sake play defense a staple of the Knicks teams of the past.

  10. the senario, given as to the signing of one max free agent and lee to about 10 mil. and then another free agent next year (carmelo anthony) is a perfect idea, I love david lee and he deserves to stay, especially because he wants to be here. lebron is a good player but I don't see him leaving cleveland.
